2 Day Safaris From Zanzibar FAQs

Is a two-day trip to Zanzibar sufficient?

The simple answer is no, but having 2 days is better than having none at all. There are various tours and packages available, but a 2-day safari from Zanzibar will always involve flying to the park on day 1 and flying back on day 2.

The advantage of this, compared to a 1-day safari, is that you get to stay overnight in the destination and have time for game drives during the best times for seeing animals: late afternoon and early morning. The downside is that you won't have a full day in the park you're visiting.

After your 2 days, you will almost certainly wish that you had more time. However, the same could be said for nearly any length of safari. Additionally, if I had to choose between a 2-day safari from Zanzibar and no safari at all, I would pick the 2-day safari every single time.

How much does a 2-day trip from Zanzibar cost?

When organizing a 2-day safari from Zanzibar, you'll encounter numerous packages and tours offered by various operators, resulting in different price points. Expect to spend at least US$500 per person each day due to costly air transfers. In peak season or if you choose high-end lodging, the price may be even greater. It's vital to confirm what is included and what is not in the quoted price with your tour operator. Generally, the price should encompass air transfers, park entry fees, lodging, meals, a guide, a vehicle, and a driver.

Nonetheless, it's important to request a complete list of what's included and excluded to prevent any unexpected costs at the time of payment.

Are all 2-day safaris from Zanzibar fly-in safaris?

Since Zanzibar is an island, experiencing a traditional safari there is not feasible. Consequently, it will be necessary to fly to the mainland of Tanzania and return to Zanzibar afterward. Given the typically limited timeframe for a 2-day safari, flying is the most effective way to optimize that duration. However, there are advantages and disadvantages associated with flying.

On the positive side, flying can be costly, which makes organizing an affordable 2-day safari from Zanzibar quite challenging. Conversely, if you can afford it, the sights during your flight into the park should justify the expense. Your journey will begin to feel less like a mere transfer and more akin to a scenic tour. A fly-in safari entails traveling from Zanzibar to an airstrip located either within the national park or just outside its entrance, as is the case with Nyerere. This airstrip is frequently situated near your lodging, and you will be transported around the park or reserve in a safari 4WD vehicle.

Which national parks are usually visited during a 2-day Safari from Zanzibar?

When embarking on a 2-day safari from Zanzibar, you will likely travel on the first day and return on the second, allowing for one night in your chosen park. To optimize your limited time, it’s advisable to fly to an airstrip located inside or very near to the park for both legs of your journey. With just 2 days and 1 night in a park, careful selection is essential.

If you decide to explore the southern part of Tanzania, Nyerere National Park (previously known as Selous Game Reserve) or Mikumi National Park are excellent options. Conversely, if you travel north, my top recommendation would be Serengeti National Park, even though it requires a longer flight. Lake Manyara National Park, Tarangire National Park, or Ngorongoro Crater also offer remarkable safari experiences.

Is the south or north of Tanzania better for a 2-day safari from Zanzibar?

When selecting a safari park in either southern or northern Tanzania, it’s hard to make a poor choice. It’s important to check with your safari tour operator whether you can fly directly to the park from Zanzibar or if a plane change is necessary, as this could take up precious time on a brief 2-day excursion. Typically, securing direct flights to parks in southern Tanzania is more straightforward. Nonetheless, it’s wise to verify this with your operator.

Regarding wildlife, there isn't significant variation between the parks. Most sought-after safari animals, like big cats, elephants, giraffes, and zebras, can be observed in all the parks across both areas. Nyerere Park provides a distinctive boat safari on the Rufiji River, which is not offered in other parks. However, be aware that spending time on the boat will diminish the time available for game drives, where you’re more likely to encounter a larger number of animals.
